About the Presenter
Curtis B. Charles, PhD.
As Director of Academic Affairs at The UWI Five Island Campus, Dr. Charles is responsible for overseeing the School of Science, Computing and Artificial Intelligence, School of Management Science and Technology, the School of Health and Behavioral Sciences, the School of Humanities and Education, as well as Institutional Effectiveness, and Sponsored Research and Programs. Dr. Charles has a distinguished career spanning over 25 years in both university systems and corporate technology. Throughout his career, he has held various positions in higher education, including faculty member, Undergraduate and Graduate Department Chair, Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences and Education, Senior Academic Officer for Program Development and Services, Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Institutional Transformation, and University President.
In addition to his work in higher education, Dr. Charles served as a Strategy and Change Executive Consultant at IBM Global Services, where he led business transformation engagements in various countries, as well as worked as a Solution Architect and Data Scientist at Microsoft Services. He worked on teams developing solutions for digital transformation in corporations, government, education institutions, and the US military. Additionally, he worked with a number of regional and national partners to start and lead the Center for Defense and Homeland Security at Fayetteville State University. Furthermore, Dr. Charles’ experience working with international institutions and programs gives him a diverse perspective that is beneficial in his role as Dean and Director of Academic Affairs. His ability to lead business transformation and develop digital solutions for various sectors is an asset to the Five Islands campus. In Antigua, he serves on a number of committees related to quality assurance and education. To add, Dr. Charles chaired the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank 6th Growth and Resilience Dialogue Climate Resilience Data-AI Challenge.
Dr. Charles served as the Vice President for Research, Development, and Innovation at RLM Communications (DoD Contractor), where he oversaw the design, development, and implementation of new products and services in the fields of Big Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Biometrics, and Cybersecurity. Curtis has worked as an entrepreneur and business owner, and served as chair of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities HBCU/Minority-Serving Educational Institution Council.
Dr. Charles is a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Howard University, Morgan State University, and Northwestern University, and has completed professional certification programs at Harvard’s Institute for Education Management, MIT’s Big Data and Social Analytics, Harvard’s Performance Assessment in Higher Education, MIT’s Building, Leading, and Sustaining the Innovative Organization, American Association of State Colleges and Universities Millennium Leadership Initiative (MLI), the Council of Independent Colleges Executive Leadership Academy, and the American Council on Education Institute for New Presidents. He holds advanced degrees in Higher Education Administration, Predictive Data Analytics, and Architecture/Smart Buildings Technology.
